Have you ever got lost in a foreign place?

Way back 2006, I stayed in Cebu for 6 months. I haven't had a chance to go out the first few days that I arrived so when I was finally given a day off, I immediately took the chance to tour around. Since it is my first time in a new land, I was excited and started wandering aimlessly that I forgot where I am and eventually got lost. I was nervous to ask someone so I started to backtrack my steps and thankfully arrived back safely. Even my first time here in Cubao, I also got lost that I have to call my husband to fetch me.

It is exciting to tour around when in a foreign place, but it is best to have a map to familiarize yourself first to avoid getting lost. My experience gave me the chance to hasten my sense of direction and to remember certain spots and landmarks as clues. This works a lot, especially when we go hiking. Since then, I haven't got lost again.

Now that we have GPS at our fingertips in a smartphone, getting lost may seem like an old-school problem. Nonetheless, just in case you got lost and can’t get a Wi-Fi, data or cell signal, but also anxious to ask someone; it is best to stop wandering even more and not to panic but rather observe your surroundings for anything familiar and try retracing your steps.

What about you? Have you got lost too? Did you panic?
