do trees suffer
from residual colonialism
do they have identity issues
do they know their roots
as they reach out
to the ever-turning sun
in search of the light
they believe is theirs to hold
or are they fulfilled
with water that rises
in their steadfast trunks
all the way to the tips
of their outstretched branches
that burst into flower
and drop swollen fruits
into the abiding shade
of the humble earth
in gratitude for their station
in an ever-changing world
