Don't put this food in the freezer to maintain the quality
Some people may think that freezing food in the freezer can make food last longer.
This location is considered better than storing it on another shelf in the refrigerator.
However, is that true?
Turns out, the answer is no.
According to the chef at the Institute of Culinary Education, Palak Patel, not all food can be stored in the freezer because it can cause the taste to change.
Patel added, generally all foods that contain milk or high water content will not taste good if frozen.
Then, he also reminded that all food that has been thawed after being stored in the freezer should not be refrozen because it makes it unfit to eat.
Not only that, this habit can also be harmful to health.
According to professor at the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida, Amy H. Simonne, Ph.D., freezing food will not remove traces of bacteria and viruses in it.
This makes cross-contamination and other foodborne illnesses easier to occur.
He also added, bacteria that grow on food after we leave it for a while will also continue to affect the quality of food when we put it in the freezer.
For that, we should know what foods should not be put in the freezer, such as the following foods:
* Milk
According to Patel, foods that contain milk, cream, or are rich in milk derivatives can spoil if frozen.
The reason is, the fat in products containing milk will separate when frozen.
In fact, some dairy products can clump because in the production process most of them have been emulsified.
The same goes for containers containing dairy products, although butter can be frozen in the freezer for up to nine months.
However, there is no need to worry if we want to store foods such as cream soup in the freezer.
Because, the cream content in it tends to be a little, so the quality can be maintained.
* Mayonnaise
Apart from dairy products, mayonnaise and foods containing mayonnaise should also not be stored in the freezer.
The consistency of products containing mayonnaise will change if stored in the freezer, such as being too soft or becoming chewy like a sponge.
* Cream Cheese
Just like other dairy products, the fat in cream cheese can also separate, making it runny after removing it from the freezer.
For this reason, neither cream cheese nor foods containing cream cheese such as sauce or cheese cake should be frozen
* Cucumber
Apart from dairy products, vegetables with high water content such as cucumbers also cannot be stored in the freezer.
According to Patel, due to their high water content, freezing them will only make the cucumbers unfit to eat.
* Tomatoes
According to Patel, while tomato-based sauces can be put in the freezer because they've been cooked, that's not the case for fresh tomatoes.
Because, freezing fresh whole tomatoes or dishes that still contain sliced fresh tomatoes will change the texture of the flesh and skin of the tomatoes.
So it is better for all types of vegetables, it is better to put them in a refrigerator that is specifically for vegetables.
However, it is not good to store it for too long, it is better to store vegetables for no more than 3 days and cook them immediately. Hope this is helpful and thanks for reading.
