Miguel Lopez De Legazpi landed in Samar
February 13, 1565
The arrival of the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi fleet in our country marked the beginning of the Spanish conquest of our archipelago. On this day in 1565, his ships landed on the shores of Cibabao in the present Samar region. This is the first time Legazpi has come to one of our islands.
On the afternoon of February 13, the Legazpi landed on the shores of Cibabao and stayed there for a week. During their stay in the area, the natives killed one of the conquistador's men, Francisco Gomez. Gomez was scheduled to make a treaty with the natives on behalf of Legazpi, but when he was about to bleed himself, the natives stabbed him. Legazpi was forced to leave the island of Cibabao without any food from there and sailed to other islands in the Visayas, in the southwest direction. They landed for the second time on the island of Tandaya in the present province of Bohol, where he met Raha Sikatuna, whom he welcomed. There the two leaders made a treaty as a sign of their friendship and good relations. On April 27, 1565, the Legazpi landed in Cebu from the island of Bohol. There they met Legazpi with Raha Tupas' staff, but eventually they also obeyed the raha and were baptized into Christianity. This time, Legazpi established Cebu as the official vassal of Spain, and established the first Spanish community there.
A few years later, the whole of Visayas fell into Legazpi's hands and he was able to establish our country as a Spanish colony.
