MY Journey to Plumbing #101
HAVE YOU BEEN SMELLING AWFUL ODOR FROM your Kitchen or Toilets or Powder Room? This is probably the reason.
First thing first, I have been studying recently about plumbing and here is what I found that I want to share with all of you!
Floor drains is a plumbing fixture that caries excess or waste water from our toilets, kitchens and in laundry areas! If you had not noticed in your house it is the small square stainless steel on your floor looking like a strainer! The function of floor drain is similar to the function of your lavatory drains.
If you will look closely at the attached photo above you can see a p shaped or formed as p pipe. In plumbing it is called a p-trap!
WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF P-TRAP?
To further understand the system we have to know the importance of P-traps. If you haven't been able to see a p-trap you can look under your kitchen sink or I have added a photo below.
Other P-traps are made of stainless specially on kitchen and lavatories. The purpose of these P-traps is to seal the water inside the trap to prevent the sewer gases from releasing in the floor drain.
SO WHY WOULD YOUR FLOOR DRAIN SMELL AWFUL IF IT HAS P-TRAPS?
One of the causes is that when your floor drain has not been used for a longer time the water from the floor drain evaporates to the air. And once the trap becomes dry it allows the sewer gases from releasing through the floor drains, making the whole area smells awful.
Tips to prevent this from happening.
*Keep your floor drain hydrated once or twice a month.
*Clean it with dishwashing liquid and remove all the dirt.

Nice article. Funny that in English they are called "P traps". In German we call them "U pipes".
