Formation of Union Parishad

According to the Local Government (Union Parishad) Act 2009, which was introduced on October 15, 2009, one Union Parishad will be formed in each union consisting of several villages. The Union Parishad shall consist of 1 Chairman elected by direct vote of the adult Veterans of the Union, 9 members from each ward and 13 (thirteen) members from each of the nine wards, including three women members elected from the reserved seats of the Veterans. For the purpose of election of members, each union is divided into nine wards according to the elected rules. One member from each ward, three women members from each of the three wards and the chairman of the entire union will be elected. The term of the Union Parishad is five years. During this period, the chairman and members of the council will receive a monthly allowance fixed by the government. A secretary appointed by the government to assist the council. Moreover, the required number of village police will help the Union Parishad in maintaining law and order.
