Bangabandhu got married to 3-year-old Fazilatunnesa when he was only 13 years old.

When the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was only 13 years old and Begum Fazilatunnesa was only 3 years old, the guardians of the family arranged their marriage. They were both cousins. When Begum Fazilatunnesa's father died at the age of 5, Sheikh Abdul Hamid, the grandfather of both Bangabandhu and Begum Fazilatunnesa, urged his son Sheikh Lutfar Rahman to marry his son Sheikh Mujib to Begum Fazilatunnesa. When Bangabandhu was 18 years old, they got married unofficially in 1936. The official marriage took place in 1942.
