Common name: Pandan (Tagalog); Screw-pine (English)

Pandan is a common perfume or spice in breads, snacks, or rice. Its leaves, which are the source of its fragrant odor, come from a plant of medium height. The leaves are oblong like grass and may have thorns on the sides or not. Large pandan species are commonly found on beaches, while small plants are common in low-lying areas.

What are the nutrients and chemicals available in Pandan?

Different parts of pandan plants can contain many types of chemicals and nutrients that can have health benefits:

Pandan contains essential oils, alkaloids, glycosides, isoprene esters, and tannins.

Pandan oil contains diterpene, d-linalool, phenylethyl acetate, citral, phenylethyl alcohol ester, ester of phthalic acid, fatty acids and steroptene.

It also contains provitamin A carotenoids.

What part of the plant is used as medicine, and how are they used?

Some parts of the plant can be used as medicine such as:

Root. The root can be stewed and drunk like tea. It can help with some body conditions. It can even be chewed to help with oral conditions.

Leaves. Pandan leaves can be grinded and mixed with oil to be used as a poultice on the body. Leaves and drinks can also be stewed.

What diseases can Pandan treat?

1. Difficulty urinating. Drinking freshly squeezed or dried pandan root is effective in facilitating urination. Drink it like tea.

2. Headache. The person suffering from a headache condition is given a drink of the fragrant pandan leaves. Grinded leaves mixed with oil can also be used to apply to a sore head.

3. Wounds. Applying crushed crushed pandan leaves helps to speed up wound healing.

4. Rheumatism. Drinking pandan root extract also helps to relieve joint pain due to rheumatism.

5. Easy gum injury. Chewing the pandan root can strengthen the gums.

6. Boil. Crushed leaves mixed with lime juice and a little salt are good for removing boils.

7. Vomiting. Persistent vomiting can be treated by drinking pandan juice.

8. Earache. The juice of the pandan flower makes the ear sore.
