Pregnancy is a new experience especially if it is a first time for a woman. That is why it is disturbing when it brings a strange feeling or condition. It is good to know the reason, for example, why a pregnant woman bleeds.

In the first few weeks of pregnancy, you will experience the onset of menstruation. This is called implantation bleeding. During regular menstruation, from light pink to dark brown the blood flows continuously for several days. In implantation bleeding, vaginal discharge ranges from bright to dark red and is on-and-off.

Why pregnant women bleed

Implantation bleeding occurs, according to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), when the fertilized egg is located inside the lining of the uterus, also known as the endometrium. What to Expect further explains, from six to 12 days the fertilized egg travels from the fallopian tube to the uterus or uterus. During the movement of the fertilized egg, small blood vessels are hit and ruptured, causing bleeding.

Although there is no need to worry about having implantation bleeding, it is still best for the pregnant woman to tell her doctor.

Aside from implantation bleeding, there are other possible causes of mild bleeding, according to the APA. This may be due to irritation of the cervix after a check-up or sexual intercourse, strenuous exercise, and a vaginal infection.

Another reason why pregnant women bleed is first trimester bleeding which is usually just a few drops so it is also called spotting. Many pregnant women experience this and stay healthy until they give birth. But a doctor's visit is still recommended. Spotting can be the first sign of a serious condition, such as an ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, and miscarriage.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg does not reach the uterus and is located in another part of the female reproductive system, usually in the fallopian tube. So this type of pregnancy is also called tubal pregnancy. It needs to be treated immediately because the fallopian tube does not have the ability to become a uterus and the embryo cannot form it.

Molar pregnancy is a placental abnormality that results from a genetic error during the fertilization process. Abnormal tissue develops in the uterus and the embryo is no longer formed. One in every thousand pregnancies in the United States becomes molar pregnancy, according to the APA, and the number of cases in Mexico and Southeast Asian countries, particularly the Philippines, is even higher.

Pregnancy leads to miscarriage or pregnancy before she reaches the 20th week, according to the Mayo Clinic website. It adds that 10 to 20 percent of pregnancies are delayed. Once again a woman is shot unknowingly because it happens before she gets a pregnancy test.

Apart from spotting, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, and miscarriage have other symptoms. Some of these include abdominal pain, back pain, and difficulty urinating or defecating.

There is still spotting even after giving birth if there is a change in the cervix of the pregnant woman or she has a vaginal infection. The so-called "show," described by the United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) may also be due to the loss of the "plug of mucus" in the cervix. This means that the cervix is already preparing for the baby to come out of the womb and this happens a few days before the pregnant woman feels contractions.

There are several other reasons why a pregnant woman bleeds during the last part of her pregnancy, according to the NHS. These include placental abruption, low-lying placenta or placental praevia, and vasa praevia. These are serious conditions that require immediate medical attention.
