African women in the face of democracy

Nigeria women in the face of Democracy.

Today I’ll love to share with you political issues, events and personalities as it relates to women in Nigeria inside Africa.

Since read.cash has poised to be one of the leading blockchain where researchers can find truth-worthy informations, I’m delighted to take them into Nigeria for some understanding on her women and democracy.

Strengthening women’s participation in politics

In developed democracies, a political system provides a leveled playing ground for both men and women irrespective of political or ethnic inclination.

The story in Africa before now was different as women were not given the opportunity to vote or govern, for either religious or cultural reasons. But the situation has changed over time with African women holding top political positions.

Like Liberia 🇱🇷 and Malawi 🇲🇼 had female presidents. In Nigeria, the opportunity for women to be voted into leadership positions have been facing a lots of challenge up till date.

From the first republic till date, no woman has been elected neither President or Vice President. Also no woman has had chance to take the mantle of leadership at the state level apart from Anambra State; out of 36 states in Nigeria when Virginia Etiaba governed the state for just three months following the impeachment of governor Peter Obi who was later reinstated by the reversal of the earlier judgement.

Virginia Etiaba

The number of women in both national and state assemblies has continued in their staggering mode and lose-diving.

Take for example, out of 109 members in the senate, women were 7 in 1999, 4 in 2003, 9 in 2007, 7 in 2011, 2015 and 2019.

Forecast on the green chamber of 360 members.

In 1999 we had just 7 women, in 2003 we had 21 women, and 27 in 2007. Then again in 2011 25 and 14 women in 2015. Currently we just 21 women in the House of Representatives.

In the view of this developments, one may ask, are African women not credible enough, why have they not taken effective leadership positions just like their male counterparts?

We can not rule out the fact that African women has contributed immensely to the political growth of the continent. In Nigeria, women has contributed huge in her political growth as well.

But in all these, I assumes that the female folks are yet to take their positions in the governance of the nation.

Late prof. Dora Akunyili

Those of our women who were in leadership did marvelously well; someone like late Prof. Dora Akunyili, Dr Mrs. Okonjo Iwuala, Oby Ezekwesiri and many more did so good in their areas of appointments.

The Challenges Facing Women In Political Appointments in Nigeria

Women finds it difficult to be nominated because there’s no woman who already the chairman of the party neither the secretary of the party. It’s difficult to be nominated when the executive heads are all male.

Obnoxious culture has kept African women in a gloomed position for ages now that most of them are afraid to come out. They rather be substituted with their men.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iwuala

In Africa, we have numerous women that are more educated than men, yet they are not given the opportunity to show their potentials.

Countries with the increased women participation in political leadership tends to be more inclusive in democratic.

The men has been ruling us, and this where we are. They are so self minded, greedy; they have one car, they want another one, they have one house, they want another one.

Politics in itself is not a dirty game, but it’s the players that are dirty. If we should consider countries where women are heading, we’ll see how far they’ve gone.

Dr. Oby Ezekwesili

Women plays important roles in political activities. All is needed to give women a chance, they don’t want to take over, just a chance to have part of it.

In our upcoming parts in this discussion, we shall look more extensively on other the factors that stands as challenge for Africa women in politics and they may be tackled. Stay tuned.

This is a dream that can't be reality in Nigeria, as long as we have those cabals in the circle of power.

I understand the sentiment, but political power is bad in itself. It won't change much with or without women in the lead.
