Planting trees is an unprecedented investment.
I found myself coming from a developing side of the world where people still preserve their names in trees 🌲
How do I mean?
My dad died 19 years ago, but we still remember him when we look at the trees he planted.
My grandpa died 55 years ago, but his name is still remembered through his investment through tree planting
How does it work?
Our predecessors did enter into oath, that’s a solemn promise with their children not to cut down some particular trees planted by them so that their numerous upcoming generations may remember them through those trees.
This method has lived with us for many ages. I’ve beginning to esteem this legacy built by our forefathers because indirectly they helped to preserve our habitat and what we’re enjoying today by retaining good number of ancient trees.
When a child is born in our Igbo tradition, after eight days when the outer abdominal cord is falling out, they use it to plant a tree for the new born, such tree becomes special and sacred for both the family and the child. Such tree remains untouched all the days of such person’s life. Such tree that marked someone’s birth is being taken care of by both the family and the child.
Igbo people in read.cash will bear witness to this beautiful tradition that has preserved good number of trees and has also helped us in remembering our roots and predecessors.
I planted the tree in the picture above few weeks ago inside my compound.
The memory of how our fathers valued trees made me to ponder today on the importance of planting trees, not just fruit trees but making and creating forests through the act of intentional tree planting.

A nice gesture. We only plant trees once a year with the school on national tree days. High trees are not wanted at places where many people live. They consider it as dangerous.
Congratulations on the newborn. The placenta is buried at a tree or bush by some. It's good food for it they say.
