I think one of the things we realise late in life is how important it is to be more present in the lives of people we care about. We keep pushing it off because we believe that no time is the wrong time. Yes, we show up when they need us, we help when they need our help, we talk to them when they need someone to talk to, but we don't really say the things we would love to say to them in return. We never let them know how much they mean to us and how important they are in our lives. The funny part is that we don't even see it, not until it's too late.
For my part, it took losing both my parents to realise this. They just disappeared like smoke in the space of four years. There was so much left unsaid, so much left undone. I'd never get those moments back. While I've already made peace with it, it still hurts.
This is a challenge to you. This week, speak to people in a way that if they died the next day, you’d be satisfied with the last thing you said to them. In such a way that they'd be happy with what you said too. They say we don't know how much someone means to us till they are gone, and it's the absolute truth. Apologise if you have to. Call them back to their mistake too. The truth is, most times, they have already forgotten what happened. But by letting it out, you're freeing yourself. It will make you feel lighter and happier.
Tell people you love them more. Be more present in the lives of those you care about. Show love. Spread love. Don't leave it for later. Say it now. Do it now. They just might be waiting for you to come to them.
