Waack/Punk is a form of dance created in the LGBT clubs of LA during the 70s disco era. This dance style was named punking dahil ang"punk" ay derogatory term for gay men in the 1970s. Naming the style punking was a way of turning this negative term into something positive.
Sa simula pa lang, ang waacking ay form of storytelling, the way to express creativity and be who you to be.
"Punking was an action
Waacking was a reaction."
A "whack" was a specific movement within the punking style. By the way, yung word na “whack” was taken from comics.
Kaya ang the heterosexual dance community enjoyed punking, ayaw nila ma associate yung sarili nila with the negative, violent, at sexual connotations of punking and therefore called the dance genre "wAAckin".
Ang unang nag change ng spelling to waackin ay si Shaba-Doo, a very famous locking dancer at that time. Siya yung first straight male waaker to learn and he brought a locking perspective to punking and waacking.
Although, *Jeffery Daniel added the "g" to waackin to make it "waacking".
Dahik ng pinalitan ito, maraming nalito kung ano bang tawag dun. Pero ngayon alam nyo na ang totoo
Waacking incorporates wild pero controlled moves that follow the beat. Arm movements up and around the head, in time with a disco or funk beat, characterize Waacking.
And meron itong strong emphasis on musicality, as arm movements follow the music and the beat, with poses thrown in.
Before it was coined as "Waacking,” it was called “punking.”
The punks aimed to transform the derogatory term for gay people as “punks” to a positive action of “punking” the music.
"Punking means to make something your b*tch. Instead na makipag away sa ibang tao, bagay at sitwasyon, punking is how we flipped the script to make own it."
Yung core values of Waacking include celebrating individuality, self-expression, freedom, storytelling, and drama.
Aside from the Whack itself, Waacking technique includes hair brushes, punking, extensions, posing, and footwork.
In all the movements, there is a strong emphasis on musicality and interpretation of its rhythm.
