Journey to the BCH East: Part 1

0 13

There is an incredible divide between the Chinese speaking BCH community and the English speaking one. This was evident when the English speaking community reacted extremely negatively to the IFP proposal. The Chinese BCH community claimed they had announced it in 2018 and had been working on it the last two years, while the English speaking community retorted that it came from way out of left field. Both sides had their fair points.

From the English speaking BCH community's perspective, there is some communication from prominent Chinese BCH community members, like Jiang Zhuoer's medium posts and Jihan Wu's Twitter (which used to be more active back in the day). That which is visible is minimal. What about that which is not seen? I'm pretty sure there are many conversations and debates that are going on in the Chinese BCH community that would be extremely beneficial for the English speaking community to know of.

Free Informational Trade Across the BCH Language Borders

I want to see if it is possible to reduce the information asymmetry that exists between the two communities. Starting as an ordinary English speaking BCH community person with extremely limited Mandarin skills, I will attempt to ingrain myself in the Chinese BCH community to keep up to date with what is happening within 6 months.

Following the Cool BCH Mandarin Speaking Kids on Social Media

From my limited understanding of the Chinese BCH community, I've learned that most BCH and crypto community talk happens on Weibo (China's version of Twitter), WeChat (Whatsapp on Steroids doesn't quite do it justice, it's a super-app with a ton of functionality). Also, crypto live streams are done on yizhibo. I'll only be talking about Weibo below.

Weibo

I won't go too much into the registration process in this article, you just register with your phone number. Having said that, I'll attach a list of Chinese crypto influencers and crypto companies I subscribed to:

ViaBTC (杨海坡ViaBTC)
Jiang Zhuoer (江卓尔_莱比特矿池)
Bitkan (BitKanLimited)
BCH Community (BCH社区)
Tron (波场TRON区块链) Yea, yea I know.
BTCC (B_T_C_C)
Poloneix (P网Poloniex)

I couldn't find Jihan Wu or Bitmain for some reason, and CZ of Binance seems to be more active on Twitter than Weibo.

If getting information on important BCH developments from the Chinese BCH community is my goal, then I think I'm on the right path. Jiang Zhuoer did a live stream AMA on Weibo 2 days ago, and Jihan Wu came in as a guest about 2/3rd's into the video. I'll talk about my repeated failed attempts to translate the interview in my next article.

再见,
Marcel Chuo

This is an interesting post....I don't know much about China's proprietary internet, and I'm not sure that I would be interested in the possibility of Chinese Surveillance through having a Weibo account, so I'll leave this to you...and just distill the important points from your work!

would it be possible to bridge the feeds from those influencers onto a "public" web platform? I used to have access to wechat back in the day (never used weibo); and I'd love to resume a live data feed..

matrix.org has a wechat bridge .. will gladly host if you can manage the account details

That is an interesting idea. If Jiang Zhuoer's (江卓尔 on Weibo) Weibo feed were to be fed into let's just say twitter, but the posts are still in mandarin, I'm trying to think if that would benefit the English speaking BCH community.

but the posts are still in mandarin

perhaps, I didn't complete the thought idea; the posts would HAVE to be translated; not just from en to zh, but the other way as well (Twitter to Weibo)..

I'm aware of few live translation services, but none of them are FREE; still could be valuable, as volunteers may step up..

We need to know more about what's going on in each others' BCH communities.

You have me as a new subscriber, I really look forward to your future observations. My Mandarin is limited to a few phrases, but maybe I can learn some more in future!
