I used to grow bearded irises. The trick was keeping the rhizome from getting rot, at least in the relatively moist climates I lived in. When dividing them, or cutting out a rotten part, dusting the rhizomes with sulfur (sulphur, if you use the Queen's English) seemed to do the trick.
