The system of dowry taken from a bride is still in Vogue in our society despite multifarious movements of women empowerment. Dowry is the worst from of exploitation. However, if dowry is given to the son-in-law by a well to do and willing father-in-law, it is no harm. But dowry gained by means of pressure is a despicable practice.
Many things are changing, but unfortunately this evil practice persist. It has now become a serious social problem . We read the tragic incidents in the newspapers every day.
Murder, acid throwing, burring and strangulation have reached an alarming proportion. Many marriages break up for the simple resion that the bride's parents cannot comply with the demand of her husband.
It is high time the government did all that is possible to get rid of the curse of the dowry system. The first and foremost thing which is necessary to raise social awareness about the evil system.
In this respect, NGO's are doing a great deal. Strict laws should be passed and enforced to make sure that the younger population feel discouraged to demand and take dowry.
