Traveling, adventures, and sight seeing are inevitable spices of human life. Just as there are a lot of activities for human beings to embark on, traveling especially to beautiful places for sightseeing is one of those activities. Humans are created in such a way that we are curious and eager to see more.

One beautiful experience that will leave you in great awe and make you feel over excited at the sight of all you will see, is the "Victoria falls"

The Victoria falls

The Victoria falls is a waterfall on the Zambezi river in southern Africa. This fall serves as a house (habitat) to several unique species of plants and animals. It is located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and is widely considered as one of the world's largest waterfalls.

The width of it measures 1,708m which is approximately 5604ft. I doubt if there are many waterfalls that can beat that.

To make it interesting for you, we have outlined some fun facts about Victoria's falls.

Here are some things worth knowing about the falls which will indeed prove to you that it's a wonderland.

Name and origin

It is perfect to say that the name of this waterfall came from the Scottish missionary named David Livingstone. History has it that the missionary was the first European to see the falls on the 16th of November 1855. Yes, that was a long time ago.

He viewed this fall from the Livingstone island, one of the two land masses in the middle of the river, immediately upstreams from the falls near the Zambian shore. Livingstone named the falls in the honour of Queen Victoria of England.

Size

Although the falls is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, but the fall is categorized as the largest, based on its combined width of 1708metres(5604ft) and height of 108metres(354ft), making it the world's sheet of falling water.

One of the seven wonders of the world

It is never a speech of exaggeration when you refer to it as a wonderland. This is because its unique features proves that it is indeed a wonderland. The attributes of the fall, qualified to be seen as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. You really need to see this fall.

The fall joins the great barrier reef, Grand canyon, the Aurora borealis, the paricutin volcano, the harbour of Rio de Janeiro and mount Everest.

It is twice the North Americas Niagara falls.

Niagara falls is a river that flows north from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It forms part of the border between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. The Niagara falls is recorded to be the largest waterfall (by volume) in North America. As voluminous as this waterfall is, Victoria's fall is twice the size of this waterfall. It is indeed large.

Originally known as the " smoke that thunders"

Local indigenous dwellers within the Zambezi, for reasons best known to them in their own local language, referred to the fall as " mosi-oa-tunya" which is translated as the smoke that thunders. This was actually the root and original name of the fall before the visit of Livingstone. Following the experiences shared by people who have visited the fall, it is indeed the smoke that thunders.

Frankly called the devil's pool

The name devil's pool is better seen as a myth other than a name. This is because no one for sure can trace the true origin of the name. The most important thing to note is that the devil's pool is another name used in referring to Victoria's falls. ALEX BARTLETT, AN ARCHIVIST at the Chestnut Hill Historical Society, says no one knows exactly where the name “Devil's Pool” comes from. But he's pretty sure it stems from an old legend, a sort of urban myth, that the Native American Lenape tribe considered the pool an interface between good and evil.
