This was a repeat of the 7-0 aggregate defeat of Barcelona by Bayern in the 2013 UCL semifinals and could have been worse if Bayern’s finishing was sharper.
Coming into the march, Bayern were the form team in the competition - unbeaten in 2020, with two domestic trophies to their name - and swept aside Chelsea in the round of 16. While Barca have endured a testing campaign, but they still have Lionel Messi, who was key to their win over Napoli.
Suarez and Barcelona got the march underway in Lisbon. But Bayern took charge in the first few minutes and their pressure was rewarded when Thomas Muller fired them ahead after just three minutes.
The game was leveled in the 7th minute by David Alaba’s own goal, but then the relentless Bavarians scored again, and again and again.
The match ended with Bayern putting eight goals past Barcelona. Coutinho and Muller, the former still a Barcelona player, each got two, while there were goals for Gnabry, Perisic, Kimmich, and Lewandowski. Alaba's own goal actually leveled the score at an early stage, but Suarez's second-half strike was merely a consolation.
This was a complete humbling for one of the biggest clubs in world football. The final score was an embarrassing 8-2 defeat to Bayern.
Bayern the best team in the world?
Bayern, who won 26 of their previous 27 competitive games, seems to have become the best team in Europe and proved it time and again in Lisbon.
Bayern march on. They will face Manchester City or Lyon in the last four and must surely back themselves to clinch a treble now.
