It's Sunday. For most Nigerians Sunday means a day off. If they're religious they go to church services. If they're not religious or not religious enough to go to church then Sunday is just a day to sleep in, laze or loaf around and do whatever they please. Some may open their businesses early or later in the day.
I am the not religious enough people. I seldom go to church service, usually I would sleep in. But I was in church today, thanks to my Aunt.
The First Mass at St Mulumba Catholic Church was at 6:00 am. We arrived about 5 minutes to time. The church is big and spacious. They somehow managed to adhere to the social distancing rule, three individuals per pew.
The mass was generally dull and kinda boring, but the Choir was good. There was a moment they got ovation from the congregation.
There was first and second offering, and towards the end, they started donations for some church project. This particular event took 30minutes of the two hours Mass. Immediately this started everything became loud. Like the donation is more important than the rest events.
This left me with this question:
Has the church become a business?
These are some of the replies
"As long as Nigeria is concerned, 70% of churches are business enterprise. Mind you, not only churches, mosques also are 50% business."
"It depends on how you look at it...The Church is a business because like every other business organization, it has to be managed properly for it to grow steadily and not collapse (at least you have to manage the human beings that make up the Church as well as the Finance that flows in and out of the Church)...On the other hand, the Church is not a business because ideally, it exists to render humanitarian services and not necessarily to make profit..."
"Church is the largest business in the world, free investment ( no start up capital require) with maximum profit plus bonus and allowance. Free staffs and respect. Till your bank account full every thing na free! free!! free!!! you go get. Damn! Church is God's own business for man"
Let me not bore you with loads of replies.
Over to you, what's your thought on this matter?
