How much from a post on social media! Hasin Jahan, the wife of Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami, could not have imagined that he would have to worry about his own life because of one post.
Hasin made the post on Facebook more than a month ago. Since then he has been receiving death and rape threats. He immediately complained to the police. But the online threat did not stop. That is why he has appealed to the Calcutta High Court today for the safety of himself and his daughter.
Shami and his wife, however, do not live together. Last year, Hasin lodged an FIR with the police against the Indian pacer on a number of charges, including physical abuse, murder and attempted rape. The court then issued an arrest warrant against Shamir. But the arrest warrant against Shamir was quashed in the high court. Hasin has been separated from his daughter ever since.
This time he is in danger because of a Facebook post given on August 8. On the day of the Bhumi Pujan ceremony at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Hasin wrote on Facebook, "Congratulations to all Hindus on the occasion of Bhumi Pujan at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya." Three days later, Hasin lodged a complaint with the Alipore police station.
"It is very unfortunate that on August 5, 2020, some low-minded people are constantly abusing and insulting me for wishing good luck to the Hindu brothers and sisters for the Ram temple in Ayodhya," he wrote in the complaint. Some are threatening to kill me, even threatening to rape me. I feel helpless in this situation. I am also worried about my daughter's future. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram — all kinds of social media attacks are putting me in danger.
"Please help me," Hasin wrote in the complaint, adding that he would be emotionally broken if this happened. Every moment is cutting me with uncertainty. If it continues like this, I will break down mentally. I would be very grateful if you would take action soon. I live alone with my daughter, so I'm even more apprehensive. Every second is like a nightmare for me now. I hope you will be kind in humanitarian justice. '
Despite Hasin's allegations, police have yet to make any arrests, according to the Indian daily Times Now News. Kolkata police had earlier said that an investigation into the whole matter had already begun. Meanwhile, Hasin has filed a petition in the Kolkata High Court today seeking protection of his and his daughter's lives.
