The art of poetry consists in taking entities
out of their hiddenness to be seen in their uncoveredness.
―With apologies to Heidegger, Being and Time
A possum killed
The small rabbit
That's been living
in my back garden.
I found body parts
Stomach and guts,
and a palette with teeth
Disturbingly human.
They're more like us
Than we think.
I'm reminded of a chipmunk
Trapped in a neighbour's pool;
Several sparrows at the edge
Anxiously hopping from side to side
Until a net gathers him up--
Rescued by my wife.
Human animal First Class:
There's no award for that.
But there should be.
Now today, on the news
Birds survived the hurricane...
How did they escape?
Well, much like us
They sheltered in place.
Wow! Nice one
