Factoring is reverse of multiplication expanded form.

Example 1:

x²+x=20

First you need to transform the equation into standard form.

x²+x=20

x²+x-20=0

Second, factor the quadratic expression.

x²+x=20

(x+5) (x-4)

Third, apply the zero product property.

(Zero product property - If the product of two real number is zero, then either of the two is equal to zero or both)

by setting each factor of the quadratic expression equal to zero.

(x+5) (x-4)

x+5=0, x-4=0

then solve each resulting equation

_____

x+5=0

x=-5

x-4=0

x=4

_____

Lastly, check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the equation x²+x=20

for x=-5

x²+x=20

(-5)² + (5) = 20

25-5=20

20=20

_________

for x=4

x²+x=20

(4)² + (4) =20

16+4=20

20=20

Both value of x satisfy the given equation so the equation x²+x=20 is true when x=-5 or when x=4
