People have become more dependent on mobile phones for communication in Corona situations. Mobile data usage has increased at a significant rate. In this context, the government has increased the tariff on mobile phone services in the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2020-21.
In the budget, the supplementary duty on all mobile phone services has been increased from 10 percent to 15 percent. Which has already taken effect. As a result, if they recharge 100 taka, customers will get 75 taka service. I used to get 7 taka service.
Mobile operators say customers are already paying high taxes. On top of that, raising taxes again will increase the cost burden.
The increase in tax on mobile phone services will have a negative impact on various sectors, said Brigadier General SM Farhad (Retd.), Secretary General of Mobile Operators Association.
15 per cent VAT and 1 per cent surcharge on mobile phone services, 15 per cent supplementary duty and total tax will increase to 33.25 per cent.
