In Chittagong, 209 garments paid in May, but did not pay 43

In Chittagong, salaries have been paid in 209 out of 252 garment factories under BGMEA. The owners of the remaining 43 garment factories did not pay their workers till June 18.

The BGMEA, an association of garment factory owners, said on Thursday (June 18th) that 189 of the 1,928 garment factories run by BGMEA members have not yet received their May salaries. Salary has been paid in the remaining 1,858 factories.

In all, 91 per cent or 1,858 existing garment factories are paying their May salaries. However, the owners did not pay the wages of 9 percent or 189 factory workers.

Out of 1,926 factories, there are 333 garment factories in Dhaka metropolitan area except 252 in Chittagong. Of these, March salary has been paid in 26 institutions.

Besides, out of 613 factories in Gazipur, 8 have been paid, out of 412 in Savar-Ashulia, 392 have been paid, 169 out of 198 garment factories in Narayanganj have been paid and 13 out of 16 garment owners in remote areas have paid their wages
