Why don't India develop Lakshadweep as a tourist destination like Maldives?

I’ve travelled to Lakshadweep recently. It has beautiful beaches but compared to Andaman and Nicobar Island the tourists here are less in number. There are very few number of beaches where tourists can stay one of them was Bangaram beach where we stayed. With us, around 20 tourists were present, 6 of them were foreigners. I absolutely enjoyed my stay there, the beach was pristine, it was peaceful far away from the chaos of the city and the people on the island were courteous. Also, there were arrangements for various water sport events. The rest of the island had a rustic charm about it and it was covered by palm and coconut trees.

Now if you start capitalising heavily on tourism thereby cleaning up the land to building big restaurant chains and hotels, destroying the marine ecosystem by bringing in more tourists and wreck the existing paradise in the process?

Great tip. I hope they don't develop it. A bit like the southern parts of Myanmar (not that you cna go there right now). Lots of beautiful beaches and less resorts. Resorts spoil it in my opinion.
