What is it?
To prevent confusion over complicated medical terms, here are the important things you should know about this virulent and often deadly infection in simple terms. Officially known as "EBOLA hemorrhagic fever" EVD is caused by the EBOLA VIRUS,which was firts recognized in Africa in 1976.
Early symptoms can include a fever, headache, joint and muscle aches,a sore throat and a general feeling of weakness. These initial symptoms are often followed by diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. In some cases, the disease causes rashes, red eyes, hiccups and both internal and external bleeding. It has a case fatality rate of up to 90 percent, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Deadly transmission
Humans are not natural hosts of the Ebola virus and it is believed that every "Patient Zero" ( the firts person to get sick) in each outbreak became infected through contact with an infected animal. Chimpanzees, gorillas, forest antelopes and monkeys are such animals that can carry the disease. Studies also suggest that bats could have been the original carriers of the virus and that they can survive without displaying symptoms of the disease. This raised speculation that they play a vital role in the existence of the virus in nature.
Infected people can spread the disease through person to person contact in the form of bodily fluids (blood, saliva, mucus, sweat and other secretions) and indirect contact in which a person becomes exposed to an environment contaminated by these fluids. In African countries where the outbreaks have occurred, the disease is also frequently spread in hospitals or other health centers wherein workers are exposed to Ebola positive patients.
There is no known cure for Ebola virus infection at the moment and patience are generally treated with supportive therapies, such as balancing bodily fluids, maintaining oxygen levels and blood pressure, as well as treating them for any complicated infections.

Should We Worry?
The current outbreak of Ebola virus in West Africa is the largest to date. However, people living in more medically developed countries (the Philippines is so, to a certain degree) have become fairly protected from various infections diseases due to widespread, competent health care and education about disease prevention and transmission. There are other reasons not to panic about the EBOLA virus.
The CDC said that the Ebola virus can be controlled through preventive measures. Isolation in a hospital's intensive care units (ICU) is one way of doing do, as the ICU is effective in segregating patients with infectious diseases. They are also in isolation to protect other patients from contracting the disease, ensuring safety and keeping others, from coming into contact with the patient's bodily fluids while the disease runs it's course. Likewise, hospital staff who are treating Ebola patients are equipped with proper gear to reduce the risk of them getting sick,as well.
African airports now strictly screen those who are leaving the continent. Those with high fevers are kept from boarding and doctors test their blood for Ebola. According to former Philippine Health Secretary Enrique Ona, the DOH already has complete reagents to detect an Ebola victim.
Zmapp, an experimental drug being used on Ebola patients, shows promise. Although it will take some, other experimental drugs or vaccines against Ebola are also being developed and will be made available worldwide. "It is a concern," said Ona, "but we are aware and doing everything we can to make sure that it does not reach us."
Reality Check
Far more than Ebola reaching out people,we should be concerned over the diseases that have long been eradicated. Many Filipinos face higher chances of contracting and dying of tuberculosis, dengue, leptospirosis, hepatitis and other viral and bacterial diseases than EVD. Although the incidents have decreased to date, it is clear that these diseases are truly our clear and present danger .
So let's not abuse our body, we need to be clean and keep bathing everyday especially taking our vitamins.
