Speed of Mobile Technologies
August 20, 2022
In this article I have tried to give a brief summary about the available wireless mobile telecommunications technologies. By reading this, you will be able to know the maximum capacity of your mobile & data provider, in terns of speed.
Every generation needs and want its own technology and services. Mobile telecommunication services are not those have stay behind, but it has been trying for the day first to win the race.
Mobile technologies, including wireless mobile telecommunication, have been improving very rapidly. The wireless mobile telecommunications technologies providers have been also trying to provide the best and unbeatable services. However, it is Impossible to provide unbeatable, because with the passage of time another technology beats it. 2G, 2.5, 3G, and 4G those were latest technologies of the time. Now 5G is the latest one, but it is not the end, scientists have been developing 6G technology.
Let go through these technologies one by one.
2G Services
2G, short version of second-generation of wireless mobile telecommunications technology, is the initial technology, and very slow.
Max. transfer speed of 40 kbit/s (5 KB/s) can be achieved over 2G.
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) over 2.5G
These are the services between second and third generations.
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) can offer speed of 56–114 kbit/s (7 –14 KB/s).
Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE)
On Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (short EDGE) up to 384 kbit/s (48 KB/s) transfer speed can be achieved.
3G Services
3G stands for third generation of wireless mobile telecommunications technology.
3G
A speed up to 0.3 Mbps can be achieved using the 3G technology.
HSPA
HSPA can provide a speed up to 1.5 Mbps on your smartphones.
HSPA+
HSPA+ has offers 4 Mbps of transfer speed.
DC-HSPA+
DC-HSPA+ has been providing transfer speed up to 8 Mbps.
4G Services
4G is abbreviated for forth generation (wireless telecommunications technology). It is also know as Long-Term Evolution (LTE).
LTE (over 4G)
A transfer speed up to 150 Mbit/s can be achieved using this technology.
LTE (over 4G+)
4G+ is also know as LTE Advanced. 4G+ has different categories, eg 6, 9, 12, & 16, each one with different transfer speed as given below:
LTE-Advanced Cat 6
LTE-Advanced Cat 6 can give transfer speed up to 300 Mbit/s.
LTE-Advanced Cat 9
A maximum 450 Mbit/s transfer speed can be achieved using LTE-Advanced Cat 9.
LTE-Advanced Cat 12
LTE-Advanced Cat 12 provides transfer speed upto 600 Mbit/s.
LTE-Advanced Cat 16
This technically offers transfer speed at 979 Mbit/s.
5G Services
So far you would have understand what is the digit part and G means. It is the generation version of wireless mobile telecommunications technology.
5G or fifth generation is the latest available wireless mobile telecommunications technology, though not all over the world, but in developed countries only. In the current available technologies, 5G can offer the highest transfer speed that is 1,000-10,000Mbit/s (1 Gbit/s to 19 Gbit/s).
6G Services
This technology is not yet developed. Meaning it is under development. However, up to 1 terabit per second (Tbps) speed can be achieved using this technology.
Radio waves in the terahertz band can boost a smartphone’s bandwidth to 1 terabit per second (Tbps).
According to a news article (forgot link/source) Chinese Scientists have conducted experiments on mice. During the experiments, it was observed that 6G (terahertz) radiation increases the growth in brain cells . DYOR
As per Chinese Scientists, the 6G Radiation can increase the size of Brain Cells.
