The room was made bright by the mid morning sun bringing life into the room. The tiles on the floor glinted, allowing the sun's ray to bounce off easily, making contact with the walls. The curtains swayed in the soft breeze giving the room an even more friendlier atmosphere.
By the corner of the room, a figure crouched on a bed, head in-between his knees with his arms hugging his legs. Still and unmoving, like a carefully placed object, blending into the background. The corner was the darkest part of the room, giving him solitude which he earnestly yearned for. The news of his mother's death had left him broken, more than he already was. His schizophrenia had gotten worse, drifting in and out of consciousness, only his friends keep him company - friends only he could see. The doctors thought he was losing it, gradually slipping past the line from sanity to insanity. But they didn't see.
Couldn't see.
They were the ones losing it.
The door opened, ever slowly and his head came up. A woman entered the room, closed the door behind her and smiled. He straightened up, smiled too. His mother had come to see him. She came close and sat on the bed, he reached out his hand and she cupped it in hers.
"Mum, where did you go? Leaving me alone." He hesitated then looked around, a corner of his lips came up in a smile. "My friends are here too."
Susan Gregory sat on the bed next to Nick, his hands cupped in hers, soft and gentle, like his heart. She smiled and patted his head. He had called her mom. Strangely he didn't acknowledge the presence of Doctor Jerry Muckins and he was seeing her as Jamie Travis. As if her mind was being read, Jerry answered.
"He's not the first time it's happening. Wouldn't be the last either. He can't see me, medically we can't tell why."
"But isn't he..."
"Schizophrenic?" Cutting her short. "Yes, but it shouldn't affect his ability to see."
Nick was grinning from ear to ear, looking left and right like he was looking at people standing beside him. His childish behavior made him appear innocent and vulnerable, like a child learning to walk, eager to take the next step beaming with smiles at the new discovery on how to use legs - slow and steady, fall and rise.
His friends were standing around them, listening in on the conversation between the two adults. Listening to his heart beat until it filled his ears. He could hear nothing else.
Quiet.
Two beats at a time.
Time seemed to slow down for him, he looked to the ceiling and closed his eyes, taking in soft shallow breaths, two beats slowing down to a rythm.
Then chaos.
His friends were getting excited over something, still his eyes remained closed.
Concentrate.
Drowning out their screams to flow into the rythm of two heart beats. He could hear it now, soft, intoxicating, beautiful. The sound filled his mind, wrapping his soul in it's peaceful melody. He felt peace rush into his being. He saw mother.
Her soft silky skin gleaming in a light not unknown source, illuminating her whole body, making her appear translucent. The music danced, tingling his body, making him vibrate.
Louder and louder the music became.
Brighter and brighter till the light pained his eyes.
He closed them tight. Peace eluded him. He opened his eyes just in time to see the last of his friends fly out the window. He looked around. He was alone.
He sat up in bed and put a feet on the floor. Electricity zapped him, up his legs and into his head. He blinked, heard the music again - this time it was coming from outside. He put his foot down and jerked it up forcefully. Something was wrong or about to go wrong.
The music became faster and louder.
He jumped off the bed and raced to the window, each step sending bolts of electricity up his legs, through his vibrating body to his brain. He had to blink each time he felt his brain shutting down. The walls closing in. But what intrigued him more was the scene outside.
The music. His friends. Gone.
A man stood outside, cladded in black hooded cloak. He scanned the surroundings, cocked his head and looked up at Nick. Those black eyes bored into his soul, eating him up on the inside.
Painfully.
Nick gripped the window still and clutched at his chest, saw a man release a chain from his hand. Big. Too heavy. As it touched the ground, electricity climbed up Nick's legs, worked it's way up his spine, shutting off the nerves as it climbed. He noticed a metal blade in the man's hand before his brain shut off.
He was out before his body hit the floor.
