The accident wasn't her fault. She honestly hadn't seen the girl carrying the huge cake coming from the opposite direction, her mind had been else where trying to think of a possible reason why the VC would summon her. Now both she and the girl were a mess of buttered cake and cheap icing. She was still standing, the girl was not.
"Ahh! What have you done! You...!" The girl on the floor yelled, using her hands to get the icing out of her face. She was totally covered in that stuff.
Now that Natalie was looking down at her on the floor her heart came up to her throat, of all the people she had to mess with it had to be.....her. She stood, glued to the spot and frozen with fear, nobody messed with the queen bee or the whole swarm would sting.
Natalie had been stung numerous times being the nerd, the geek, the one with the glasses and always with the books, the one who answered all the questions correctly, the one who sat at the very front and the one with no friends. She was starting to get immune to the stings but with what just happened now, she feared for the worst. She should run, queen bee hadn't seen her face yet, she didn't know, she should...
"Natalie...! What...?" The VC stepped out of her office after hearing the commotion. "Oh my goodness, Stella, what happened?!" She got down to help.
'Just great, she had to call my name. Thanks for ruining my chances ma'am!'
"I didn't...I'm really sorry Stella. I didn't see you."
"Then of what is the essence of the over sized glasses sitting on the bridge of your nose!" She yelled, getting off the floor with the help of the VC.
"Save it!" She frowned. "I'll deal with you..!" She brought her finger right in front of Natalie's face, "...later."
Natalie didn't know when the "later" would be but she didn't expect it to be this late. It was already nearing the end of school hours and she was beginning to wonder if Stella had forgotten about the whole thing, but when she bumped into the other members of the swarm, she knew she was really in for it. She braced herself, but they just breezed past her, they didn't even make fun of her as they always did. Asides the death glare they shot at her, they didn't touch her.
Ok Stella, I'm waiting? Are you planning something bigger now?
Natalie nervously paced back and forth at the back of the stage, not only was Stella's delay adding to the blocks weighing on her heart, but now she had to step out on stage to address the whole school. The whole school! She couldn't. They would feast on her raw flesh with their ever judging eyes, but she had to, it was something she did every last Friday of the month but with the incident with Stella she just couldn't help the feeling. The lunch she ate earlier seemed to upset her stomach, running free like butterflies in a enchanted garden. Maybe she should back out.
"Mrs. Gay?" She called the attention of the VC, "I don't feel so good. I don't think I can do this."
"But Natty, you've always done this. You're the only one who can do this."
"Don't worry Natty, nobody is expecting much from you." With that she shoved her through the closed curtains and onto the open stage.
Is that supposed to be a pep talk? Humor me.
Taking a quick breath to steady her voice, she caught the microphone in her hands and brought it close to her lips.
"Hello students of...ahh!!" She froze, something cool poured on her head and ran down her back. The liquid stinked, she knew what it was; ammonia. At first she was shocked and then she sighed, releasing the breath she had been holding.
"You finally did it." She said under her breath as the chemical washed over her, thoroughly soaking her hair and outfit. Standing there with her eyes closed and her head down she heard the "oh" of the audience gradually build up into a roar of laughter.
Natalie smiled, somehow she felt relieved and as the whole school laughed, she walked off the stage with a much lighter heart.
