What we often notice on our skin are moles on various parts of the body. Sometimes, when we do not like the location of these moles we get irritated. We want to get rid of it.
Nevi or moles are the dark spots that grow on our skin. It comes from the "pigment-producing cells" of the skin called "melanocytes."
We usually have a mole. Almost everyone already has it. It varies in size, it also varies in quantity. There are people with many moles, there are only a few. Mole can be flat or bulging, smooth or loose (like a wart), or with hair growing from it. The mole can be brown or dark brown, can only be skin-colored (flesh-colored) or slightly yellow-brown. The others, starting to turn red but eventually starting to turn black.
The mole begins to develop in our infancy and until a person reaches adolescence. But there are people who continue to grow moles even as they get older. In pregnant women, some moles turn black or grow due to hormonal changes that take place in their body. So pregnant women should not worry if they notice a change in their moles.
Mole is not removed. Once grown, it is permanently on the skin.
Our common concern is whether the moles are cancerous. No. Mole is not a type of cancer. However, some moles can lead to cancer if the cancer is caused by melanocytes. "Melanoma" is what we call mole cancer. So even though moles are not cancerous, it is important to pay attention to them when we see a change in them.
Here are some changes in the mole that can warn of melanoma: 1) Growth of the mole, especially if the edge is irregular; 2) Tanning; 3) Bleeding; 4) Seems inflamed or swollen; 5) Itching; 6) Color change; and 7) Itching.
Those with more than 10-20 moles are more at risk of developing melanoma compared to people with fewer moles. If it becomes cancerous, such a mole, including the skin around it, will need to be operated on.
But overall, most of our moles are harmless. No need to delete it unless of course, you are not comfortable with it. Sometimes, these moles serve as "beauty marks" on the face. Take a look at the mole of Lorna T and Nora Aunor.
