Who is the best player in the world? may elicit five or six different responses from the average football fan.

Although supporters of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may have history on their side and strong arguments, the major two are nearing the end of their careers, so the debate is no longer as unambiguous as it once was.

5. Dimitri Payet

Dimitri Payet is still having a blast in Marseille, despite the fact that he may bring up memories of whipping free-kicks and rabona assists in east London.

For Jorge Sampaoli, the playmaker has shone, tallying five goals and three assists so far this year. In terms of statistics, he's still perfect as ever.

4. Robert Lewandowski

According to WhoScored, Robert Lewandowski's rise to god-like production levels over the past two years is showing no signs of slowing down. The prolific Pole is currently rated at 8.14 for the season.

As Bayern has gradually transformed into his team with everyone else converging to back his efforts, it takes into consideration his 10 Bundesliga goals - count them - this season. However, you probably didn't need statistical analysis to know how talented this man is.

3. Karim Benzema

Since Ronaldo departed the group, he has been without a doubt the most crucial player for Real Madrid, although being the least showy of the BBC.

Karim Benzema has flourished under Ancelotti as he did under Zinedine Zidane, scoring nine goals and dishing out seven assists so far this season. He also received five Man of the Match accolades from WhoScored, underscoring the Frenchman's prominence.

2. Mohamed Salah

He is ranked second overall but first in the Premier League.

With 10 Premier League goals and nine straight goals for Liverpool in all competitions, Mohamed Salah is in the peak of his career. Salah started playing right away and hasn't stopped since Matchday 1, while the Reds have progressively shown signs of being back to their best.

This season, he had an 8.41 rating from WhoScored.

  1. Erling Haaland

Haaland is not only consistently effective and excellent in front of goal, but he also holds the top two spots in this list for aerial duels and shots-per-game. Who could contest the stats with 49 goals in his first 49 Dortmund games?
