Learned optimism

If you are not an optimist learn to be!

Every day we are often overwhelmed by pessimistic thoughts from which it is difficult to "get out". We often think that we cannot significantly influence the situations we find ourselves in and give up easily.

Renowned psychotherapist and writer Jorge Bucay told an interesting story about an elephant who, as a child, was chained to a stake. The Elephant tried to break the chain every day, but he did not succeed. When the elephant grew older, he was certainly strong and big enough to break free from the chain, but he didn't even try.

People often behave the same way in different life situations, guided by the thoughts "I can't and never will be able to!"

It is a learned state of helplessness in which a person gives up because of the belief that his actions cannot significantly affect the outcome of the situation, even when he has the opportunity to help himself, the opportunity to change or repair the damage caused by that same situation.

The good news is that there is a cure for helplessness, and that is learning optimism!

Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, points out that being optimistic means believing that everything that happens to us is exactly as it should be (not necessarily good or bad). The belief that we can successfully solve small tasks every day, regardless of the past and the future, will strengthen our self-confidence around solving large tasks and challenges. Being optimistic means believing that every day we are given new opportunities and opportunities to be successful. Of course, commitment and perseverance are needed for faith to have great strength - change does not happen overnight!

Therefore, in any of the following life challenges, instead of lying in bed with black thoughts, I suggest reading a book, listening to music, or walking in nature with a focus on what you hear, see, and feel in that moment. Remember that the Sun rises every day, regardless of the chaos on Earth!

Stop being a pessimist, learn optimism today and find yourself doing better in situations where others gave up easily.
