The word “respect” came from the Latin word “respectus” which means to demonstrate high regards to something or someone. Growing up, we always heard about giving respect as it is considered to be a very basic human rights, be at work, school, or even with the people who we don’t know about. Respect plays a vital role in every society, as simple as its definition, still a comprehensive term to which people argue about: Do you respect people even when they don't deserve to be respected? You probably heard this question at least once in your life, and it is still a very big mystery that needs clarification and justification to whether in between, respecting or disrespecting what should be your response. Without a doubt, most of us would probably respond that everyone deserves respect because we all wanted to be respected right? Would that be applied to people who are disrespectful?
Generally speaking, respect has been around for many centuries that passes by many generations. Through that time, its meaning are interpreted in different ways. But one thing is for sure that we all agree on, showing respect is a sign of good ethical behavior as it creates values and a positive feeling to anyone who receives it. As people basing the definition of respect to their own experience, emerges two point of views: Respect is earned, not given vs. respect is not earned, it is given.
Respect is earned, not given. This quote suggest that to be able to receive respect, you must do something to deserve it. You shouldn't forced people just because you asked for it. Believer of this quote believes that in order to be respected, you must be respectful as well. It is like a give and take situation, fair enough right? Good point. How can you be still good to this person if that person doesn't deserve your kindness.
Respect is not earned, it is given. Respect is something unconditional, you give it to anybody without asking anything in in return. This might look a little unfair but I think it makes sense as a core value and a basic human right, it should be given to every person in the world regardless of what his/her attitude.
Why do we respect even when we're disrespected?
Respect has come a long way and there's no way that this value should be eradicated for some misunderstanding, it must be preserved. Certainly, respectful behavior is important for survival in school, in work, or in any setting of our lives. You might be wondering how, let me tell you why. When we are being disrespected, we feel bad right? Then, makes us different from those people? None. It seems like, we are turning to people whom we don't like to be. Keep in your mind that you should treat people the way how you want to be treated, if others can't do it, you can. Respect keeps our society strong, imagine without respect, how would our world be? It would be impossible to keep an harmonious society. For our world to be a better place, respect is a small acts of kindness that can bring a big impact in making our place a better place to live in.
