Seething, he tried to shift his thoughts away from things that annoyed him. But the more he tried to not concentrate on things that angered him, the more did such thoughts sprout in his head. First, he tried to stop thinking about his allergy for fish.
Then he happened upon the altercation he almost had with a stranger on his way home that evening. A tinge of anger became visible as he squeezed his face, obviously trying too hard to skim over that thought. It wasn't working. Odeh became more angry as he remembered how he had almost flared up as he exchanged words with the superstitiously naive stranger who had accosted him on his evening hike for raising his hands above his head. Feeling insulted, he had yelled at the stranger:
"Hey, how could you just confront me so rudely? Are you okay at all?"
"Wait, don't you know it's not good for you to be having your hands on top of your head like that? Aren't you Yoruba?"
The stranger had asked, defiantly, trying to justify his rude manner of approach.
"No, I'm not Yoruba. And even if I was, I wouldn't see anything wrong in stretching my arms after a tiring hike. Besides, I'm not superstitious. Please, don't go about barking your superstitious beliefs at random people you meet on the streets anymore."
That was the response that irked the superstitious stranger. He drew near him, stared right into his face and then said; "I'm sorry to have approached you so but that response of yours isn't right. Take it back."
"Ok. I'm sorry too. Just don't confront people like that next time."
As the stranger was about responding, the ringtone of a phone blared out. It was the stranger's phone. It was also the best chance for Odeh to walk out of the discussion with the distracted stranger, and he seized it.
Calm settled in his face as he got over that thought but a squeeze took over again as he moved on to the next thought. Love.
