Australia's Great Barrier Reef, recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site, is suffering "massive bleaching" due to high sea temperatures, the authority that manages the marine reserve said this Friday (03/25/2022). An aerial inspection showed that this phenomenon occurred in multiple reefs, "the fourth since 2016," said the marine park authority. Scientists say that climate change and the consequent warming of the oceans are the main responsible for coral bleaching, which occurs when these organisms, subjected to thermal stress, expel the algae that live in their tissues and give them their bright colors. On this occasion, this bleaching has occurred despite the cooling effect of La Niña, a climatic phenomenon that cools the oceans and is affecting Australia, the park authority said. "Weather patterns over the next two weeks continue to be critical in determining the global extent and severity of coral bleaching in the marine park," it said. Home to some 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of shellfish, Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest reef system, stretching more than 2,300 kilometers along the country's northeast coast.
