When Marketing Worlds Drift Apart

While de-googling my phone and installing an open-source operating system on my Android device, I had a similar feeling to when I moved from macOS to Linux on my MacBook Pro. It felt as if two marketing worlds that somehow coexisted previously, one living more or less in the shadows and the other being the hostess of the masses, briefly collided only to drift apart at lightning speed and continue onto opposite trajectories.

What exactly am I referring to?

For those of you who have never been exposed to these different worlds what I am about to say will sound unusual. On the other hand, those of you who navigate both worlds seamlessly while choosing the less exposed marketing realm over the ego-corporate-branding you name it bonanza will find a certain comfort and humor in what I’m about to share.

There is a marketing world out there that operates based on trust, community, integrity, caring, sharing, friendship, kindness and love for fellow humans. This might sound far fetched and fairytale-like if you’ve spent your entire life giving your valuable time, energy, money and attention to entities, organizations and structures that have been brilliantly designed and disguised to suck everything out of you without you even noticing.

I’m not talking about blockchain, web 3.0, encryption, the metaverse or some other weird word that has recently infiltrated our vocabulary.

What I’m talking about is free open source.

When Humans Dictate Marketing Campaigns And Not the Other Way Around

First, let’s get the following out of the way:

Yes, I’m aware of the fact that there are different kinds of open source. Firefox would be a blast without Mozilla and several Linux distributions would be better off without certain entities that remind us of disturbing elements we encounter everywhere in the other marketing world.

This being said, I am amazed by the sheer amount of free open-source software and CRM programs where codes can be examined by everyone around the globe thus enabling the individual to provide feedback, point out possible vulnerabilities and offer solutions.

Did you ever get the chance to look into software provided by Google, Apple or Microsoft?

Unless you’ve been an IT employee working on the code for the above-mentioned entities, chances are you will never be able to get a sneak peak into their closed source software. And even if you’ve worked on say a new Microsoft Office release, rarely (or never) did you get the opportunity to see the entire code.

Let’s be practical and look into some free open-source alternatives to replace your paid, big tech closed source software:

  • Replace Microsoft Office with LibreOffice or OpenOffice

  • Looking for video editing software to replace Screenflow or Camtasia? Check out OBS Studio and Kdenlive

  • Sick and tired of paying a ton of money on Adobe Photoshop without using all the features? Gimp might be sufficient to what you’re doing

  • Want to get rid of Google Chrome or the Safari browser? No problem, head over to BraveEpiphany or LibreWolf just to name a few

  • Don’t want to use Google Search and continue to feed the beast with your personal data? Look into Startpage or Presearch, a decentralized blockchain-based search engine

  • You have an Android phone and want to de-google it? Here are some of the free open-source operating systems you might want to look into: LineageOSCalyxOS and GrapheneOS

What sets these free open-source projects apart from their counterparts is the community behind every single initiative that I’ve linked to above. When you visit their websites, you’ll be confronted with simplicity, clear statements, precise instructions and open communication.

The lack of sleazy marketing slogans and phrases will be refreshing, strange and uncomfortable at the beginning as it’s the exact opposite of what you’ve been programmed to see, read and hear for decades.

Free to Jump Between Marketing Worlds

In all these years that I’ve been practicing marketing while continuously learning about how human behavior can lead to certain thinking and action patterns, I’ve discovered some interesting insights about what I like to call low vs high frequency marketing weapons.

When low frequency marketing weapons are deployed to the extremes, people repel your products and services. Guess what happens when you do the opposite aka you turn on the high frequency marketing machine based on kindness, growth, contribution and love just to name a few? Human beings feel blissful, fulfilled and whole thus becoming attracted to you like a magnet.

You decide what works best for you: Low or high frequency marketing weapons?

I invite you to stay open-minded and enjoy the more or less bumpy ride. Let your mind bend so that you can access higher levels of consciousness that will enable you to navigate this refreshing space more smoothly.

Become a pro jumper between marketing worlds. Whatever choices you make, decide wisely as it will alter your future.
