The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic root word ramiḍa or ar-ramaḍ, which means scorching heat or dryness. Ramadan fasting in law is fardhu (compulsory) for adult Muslims, unless experiencing obstacles to do so such as being sick, traveling, old age, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetes or menstruating.

During fasting from morning to evening, Muslims are prohibited from eating, drinking any liquids, smoking, and having sex. In addition, they are commanded to avoid sinful acts to complete the reward of fasting, such as saying bad things (such as insulting, slandering, cursing, lying) and fighting. Food and drinks can be provided every day, from before sunrise (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib).

The specificity of the month of Ramadan for Muslims is reflected in the Al-Quran in surah Al-Baqarah verse 183 which means:

"O you who believe, it is obligatory for you to fast as it was obligatory on the people before you so that you are cautious."

- (Al-Baqarah 2: 183)
