Are you driving safely? Have you ever thought about being involved in an accident? Are you aware of the dangers waiting around every corner? Is road safety at the top of your priority list?

Every year, millions die and suffer injuries due to road accidents. In addition to being dangerous, driving without knowledge of the rules can also get you into trouble with police officers.

Road safety should always be a concern. If you want to ensure your safety, then these road safety tips will certainly come in handy.

1. Do not drink alcohol while driving

Not only will drinking alcohol while driving affect your performance behind the wheel, but it puts yourself at higher risk for injury and/or death in a car crash. Alcohol affects your coordination, judgment, reaction time, perception, memory and processing speed. Studies have shown that drivers who consume one alcoholic beverage before driving have an increased accident rate than those who don't. If you're going to drive after consuming alcohol, make sure you plan ahead and have someone else drive safely.

2. Look out for pedestrians

When driving at anytime, look out for pedestrians crossing the road. Be alert and slow down, particularly when approaching intersections. Always leave enough room between your vehicle and the pedestrian to avoid collision. Remember to wear a seatbelt and buckle it tightly.

3. Share the road

Being mindful of the movements of others around you is essential. Make eye contact with drivers when passing them on the left side and pay attention to any vehicles that may be making sudden movements. When merging into traffic, always check first before pulling out onto the highway.

4. Drive defensively

The best way to prevent a car crash involving a pedestrian is to stay focused on the road and keep your hands near the steering wheel. Drivers need to check their blind spots frequently and adjust their mirrors to ensure that they remain aware of surrounding cars, cyclists, and pedestrians.

5. Use headlights

Driving at night requires good lighting. Driving without headlights is illegal in many countries and can result in you being fined or even arrested. Make sure you use high-quality bulbs that will last for several years.
