Nollywood is the popular name by which the Nigerian movie industry is known all over the world. It has gone on to be the second most matched movie behind Hollywood, now this multi million industry did not just take off in a day, like the popular saying that "Rome was not built in a day"it took the people who have brought it this far a lot of commitment, passion and zeal for them to have arrived at this stage. But now the originality of what it used to be know for is what so many people are beginning to doubt if they are still in line with it today.
Brief history of Nollywood
The Nigerian movie industry populary known and called Nollywood all over the world started sometime in the 1900s,they name Nollywood was given or rather assigned to the Nigerian movie industry by a white man after the hollywood as the whites calls their own.they first started by airing out normal drama without it being displayed on the television, people would go to a particular place to have a great view of it.as time passed by the Nigerian network television authority (NTA) starting airing it inorder to reach a wider audience and at the same time make it to be more popular among the countries of the world and this fit they have achieved. Later on NTA stope the airing of it on their network television after it had gained attention over Nigeria and some notable african countries.then the issue of how to make good and quality movie came in with a view of reaching a wider audience, this made the producers as at that time to go into the recording of it into cassette which later metamorphosiesd into the recording in vcd and dvd plates. Meanwhile while all these things were going on, the revenue was being shard between the movie producers and people who were into piracy, mind you piracy is the sole reason why Nigerian movie industry does not make the money they should make off the movies they produce. They whites equally experience piracy but it's not as rampant as it is down here in Nigeria.
Over the years the Nigerian movie industry has evolved so much that one could mistaken it to be a dream, in the past inorder to attract viewers a popular figure would always be beckoned but this is no longer the case today. Some the movies that brought Nollywood into lime light includes "Living in Bondage" where andy okenkwo played a vital role, this particular movie protayed the difficulty and the so man rough terrains one would pass through before one makes it in life,it dipicts the story of andy okeke who worked so hard to be rich but was faced by too many obstacles and eventually ended up using his wife to d money ritauls as a result of the bad companies he kept, led into the occultic world by one Mr.omego whom was know to be a regular vip at different occasions. This movie was a block buster back then because it was about or it gave a real definition of how tough life is and how bad people who failed to take it easy often end up in misery. Living in Bondage even up to now is still being played In some households, another blockbuster was the rattle snake, the billionaires and so many others. But today the Nollywood seems to be deteriorating in quality as the only reason why people do watch it is because of the improvements that has been made in it's production i.e its sound, video quality and so on but the content itself is no longer as sweet as it used to be, some people are even of the opinion that Nollywood is now likened to a porn industry because the kind of indecency that goes on there leaves one to only believe without having any iota of doubt, unlike in the days when it was still fresh, the movie was about quality then, actors like Chinedu and osita popularly called akin and pawpaw made us develop stomachache due to laughter lols. Children used to forget about the errands they were sent on during these movies, osufia, chiwetalu agu, the dead sam loco, mr.ibu just to mention but a few made Nollywood a movie for relaxation not forgetting pete edochie whose words are wisdom. These actors really did and are still putting in their best order to shoot us to the very top. Today's actors and actresses are all about the money without minding what they shun out to their viewers and as a result they are fast loosing it and dragging us back which we don't want so we call on all the movie producers to sit up and do their best inorder t ensure that this industry Is moved to a greater heights.
We're very much progressing, but we need more creative ideas.
