Hip hop music dates back to the early 1900s in africa as a result of the early influence of the whites men in africa. Though it came to Nigeria later but what drived the Nigerian youths into the hip hop music was un employment as this music gained popularity in Nigeria during the time of military regime. Their was lack of work or jobs for those graduating from the University so the youth decided to invest in themselves through the rap music. One could record good music and make some money off it because of how cheap it was then to make music and even the video for the music and again their was little or no concern about piracy,so one made his money from music then. The founding fathers of the rap music in Nigeria were 'dj kool, bambata and grandmaster flash, this three started mixing the rap music with pidgin and even some adding thier dielect to it although the dielect part wasn't that popular until platumshum bois, eldee the don if trysbe,eEedris Abdulkareem and so many others.hip hop was used to entertain the audience and was equally used to criticize the government.Later in the 1990s it began to gain more recognition in the Nigerian community as the result of the influex of some artists who came back from the diaspora such as naeto c,jjc ,419 squard and so many others who immediately started changing the rap music from just English to any language the deemed fit such as Yoruba, igbo or any other language the audience could understand. They used the rap music to express themselves and equally to voice out the errors of the government.
As time passed by so many other artists started going into hip hop,the likes of MI Abagana, vector the puppet,Mode 9 and so many others to the rap game across the shores of Nigeria into being acceptable across the countries in africa, the Nigerian hip hop started to get massive airplays in almost all the countries in africa, with mode9 and eEedris at the fore front of it and Mi was busy developing himself until he was ready, immediately He was ready he started shuning out good rap music that were so melodies and at same time passing a strong message.MI went ahead to become the best rapper in the whole of Africa which he dominated for so many years before he started to mentor his record label mate 'ice Prince,Ice as he fondly calls himself did not let his master down he took off mixing English with pidgin and with his oyibo like accent he soon became a house hold name.Ice still went on to become the best rap artist in africa with the wining of the "BET awards' he continued to shun out bangers after bangers, the oleku singer began to dwindle as it is the case with musicians as your glory would not last for ever, Vector the puppet was equally witnessing the same thing as ice prince though Ice prince had gone in to the international level. All of these urchered in jessy jagzz the brother of MI though people claimed jessy has a better lyrics than Mi but then his inability to maintain consistence which is the backbone of the music industry made look like one who was wandering in the wilderness of rap music looks.Dagrin equally took the scene though he majored in rapping with his dialect which was Yoruba and his time was cut short though he made name before going.Dagrin was and still remains the pioneer of native rap music inr the contemporary Nigeria music industry.
Olamide soon came on the stage and immediately became a house hold name with songs like "illuminati, omotoshom and this particular song which I'm yet to remember,he became a beast instantly in the game . Shuning out wonderful music was all olamide was doing, baddo was felt in all the hook and cranny of the society, hardly could there be a party without him being invited.then phyno came on stage with his album no guts no glory and they continued to adhere strictly to the rap game without having double standards.or compromising the statuesquo of the game. Listening to them was very wonderful and I would say that I was previlegde to have listened to the Nigerian system of rap music when it was good unlike what we have now, rappers are now singers with no shame again ,as a result one of the fathers of the game 'Mi , poured out his dislike of the hip hop musician through his single titled'fix up your life, even after the yabbing some if not most of them are still busy replacing their original rap logo with Afro pop apart form Falz who has shown us that rap is his calling and has remained true to it.please let us go back to the era when rappers were rappers and not singers.
