Greed is a curse
Dr. Jones was playing on his computer and suddenly a nurse rushed into his room. He was so annoyed and asked the nurse who was whining like a dog in the emergency room. She was so nervous and replied that a 17-year-old guy had come in after an accident. She added that he urgently needed the Dr.'s attention.
But the doctor didn't shut down his computer and left his desk. He didn't act like a doctor and told the nurse to be quiet. He also asked her if she could not see he was playing. She tried to convince him saying that the patient was badly injured and screaming in pain! Then he asked her if his parents arrived yet. She replied that they had not come yet but they are trying to contact them. The nurse added that he was in a car with a friend who didn't survive. He seemed to start an argument. He said that they should not have raced on the streets at night. He was satisfied because the guys got what they deserved.
The nurse was being restless. She asked the doctor if he would check that poor guy. Then he told the nurse to call him when his parents arrived because he needed confirmation that they would pay for their son. "I like to get money in advance.", he said. The nurse left, and Dr. Jones calmly continued playing solitaire on the computer. More than anything, he loved that game and money which he never had enough of.
He told people at the door of the surgery room how much he valued the health of their relatives. In desperation, people paid as much as he asked. And soon, his greed drove him to the point where he would not ever examine a patient for free.
Before he had finished playing, the nurse again came in and said that the boy's condition was getting worse by the second. She madly told the doctor that he was in a lot of pain. Without taking his eyes off the computer, Dr. Jones asked if his parents had arrived. The nurse replied that they had not come yet. But his mom is on her way, and they could not get his father on the phone. He told the nurse to call him when his mother got there. And in the meantime, he would finish playing solitaire. But the nurse wanted to save the boy. She desperately told the doctor that it looked like the guy had internal bleeding. She requested him to look at him for a minute.
"What are you? A doctor, to diagnose him?", said the Dr to the nurse. Then ordered her to inform him when his mother came with money. And then he told the nurse to get out. The nurse sighed heavily and left.
And Dr. Jones, dancing to the song on the radio, made himself a cup of tea, and smiling, counted out the amount of the bribes he had received for that night's shift. Then he made himself comfortable in his chair and continued playing his favorite game.
A few minutes later, he heard a woman crying loudly in the corridor. It made the Dr. annoyed because the sound of crying was approaching his door. He knew he could not finish his game, so became angry. Suddenly the office door opened, and the doctor froze in surprise. Because standing on the doorstep in tears was his wife, Mary!
He was shocked and asked her what she was doing there. He also asked her why she was crying. But she was not in a condition to reply. She somehow said, "Robbie... Our Robbie..." Dr. Jones frantically searched for his phone to call his son and ask him what he was doing because his wife was hysterical and could not explain. But he found that his phone's battery was completely empty.
He ran terrified into the waiting room, and when he looked at the boy on the couch, he recognized him as his son, Robbie. In a panic, he checked his pulse, but there was none. Then he frantically started compressing his heart. But the nurse stopped him, saying: "Dr. Jones, it's too late. His heart stopped three minutes ago because you didn't help him in time..."
The doctor looked at his son's lifeless body and cried bitterly. He cursed himself and his greed, which had blinded his eyes and killed his innocent, only child.
