Cultures and traditions How possibly can we differentiate between what culture is and what tradition is? But thinking about it deeply, is there truly a difference between these two related words? Culture and tradition are more like synonymous words and more likely used as interchangeable words in a phrase or sentence but shockingly these words have different but essential meanings. You can get knowledge about traditions that you have experience or knowledge about before and also get access to different cultures in different part of the world without stress at all because this world we live in is intertwined but each cultures and traditions must be understood clearly and adequately. To define culture, we reason it as a lifestyle, it encompasses traditions, human conviction, qualities, customs and dialects. While tradition on the other hand can be defined as behaviors, characters and beliefs that passes down through generations and accustomed it to their way of living.

Right Way To Success What is the right way to define success? Various ways and methods have been put forward on how you can make it or be successful in life but they say sometimes not the same thing or process that worked for A will also work for B. For a certain methodology to work for you, firstly you have to believe in yourself. You wish and dream of becoming someone great, influential and successful in life but you don't believe in yourself, how do you expect that to pay off? So you have to believe that you can actually be who you dream of being. Secondly, believe in that word "success" and that will take you a long way because your believe in it will keep driving you and keep you going till you achieve your desired aim and goals. And lastly you have to believe in that methodology(s) you know or you learnt, because the road to success is not always smooth and if the road gets so tough and rough, you might start doubting that methodology and in turn you likely give up and moreover you can't work with something you don't believe in, it will always become a failure. Patching in Road construction A patch is defined as, “an area of pavement where part of the original pavement has been replaced or covered with new material to repair the existing pavement. A patch is considered a defect no matter how well it performs.” (NMDOT 2007). As asphalt concrete pavement ages and is exposed to the effects of weathering, it begins to break down and has a likelihood of developing potholes. Potholes are an annoyance and a danger to the public and their patching consumes time from state department of transportation and local department of public works agencies that could be spent elsewhere. Therefore correctly patching potholes the first time is extremely important to reduce long-term costs associated with repeated patching. In addition, correct patching techniques prolong the life of the pavement and prevent further degradation, which can lead to an accelerated rate of decay of the pavement. Potholes can be dangerous to the travelling public, and “on principal roadways potholes are considered dangerous if they are vertically sided, are more than 1 inch deep and have an area of greater than one sq. foot.”

Drainage Works Excavation of the drainage is the first operation to be carried out on the site, the 9km long road was divided into three and an engineering team were assigned to each. The distance from the established centre line at the middle of the road to the centre of the drainage was 11.4m wide and the drainage is about 1.8m wide. The side of the drainage is pegged and then dusted (application of white sand for easy excavation by the excavator). After the dusting of the drainage path the excavator starts to digging. The material recovered from the digging is either classified as suitable or unsuitable material. The good (suitable) materials are retained for future filling of the cross section while the bad (unsuitable) materials are taken away by truck to be disposed somewhere else. The good materials are identified by the compatibility of the soil and the percentage of humus present in the soil. The good material contains a very low percentage of humus. There are two methods of constructing drainage works, which are precast drainage and in-situ drainage

Setting Out in Civil Engineering This task is usually undertaken once the site has been cleared of any debris or obstruction and any reduced excavation work is finished. It is always the responsibility of the contractor to set out the road course using information provided by the designer or surveyor. We are told that accurate setting out is of paramount importance and should therefore only be carried out by competent persons and their work checked thoroughly, preferably by different personnel and by a different method. There are factors we consider when laying out the road plans on site. This includes the size of the road, the width of the drainage and the width of the walk way. The other factors we noted are planning requirements by the local authorities We were told the first task in setting out the road is to establish a baseline, this we did using line and peg. The peg had a nail in it middle onto which the line is tied and it was driven into the ground, the line is stretched and another peg with nail in it middle was used to hold it down at another edge. The base line is also a line on which all the setting out can be related, it often coincides with the centre of the road. The position of this line must be clearly marked on-site so that it can be re-established at any time. We were told the methods that could be used for setting out and the instruments and they are stated below; Methods of Setting Out: Ranging Using of levelling instrument The instruments used: Ranging pole Line Pegs Levelling staff

Construction of Box Culvert The type of culvert used in this construction is box culvert (cutting the section while looking through the hole). The blinding for the culvert foundation is 50mm, the spacing between blinding and the reinforcements is 50mm (cover foundation), 16mm steel rods are used has the main bar [U-bars] while 12mm are used has the distribution bar. The first sets of reinforcement steel bars are arranged with the spacing of 150mm – 200mm between the main and distribution bar. Horse benches are placed and positioned on the reinforcements arranged earlier to space it from the next main and distribution bars coming on top of it, the horse benches gives 150mm spacing, the mixing ratio used for the construction of the box culvert was M25 according to design.

Construction of Reinforced Concrete Bridges The Drainage of the Road is a major feature of the road that can determine how long the road will survive the hydrological factors in the area. Since water weakens asphalt, it is advisable to make sure the water that gets on the asphalt easily runs off and finds its way to the nearest water body. The surveyor made use of the coordinate in the design to locate and set out the points and mark the width of the excavation for the operator to excavate using excavator in which the depth of the excavation should be about 1m, after the excavation, the point is been set out again and level is taken for the drainage invert after which is the blinding of the excavated area using a concrete grade of M15 with the thickness of 50mm throughout the chainage, When the blinding is cured, the reinforcements are been arranged and positioned on the blinding. The reinforcement main bar (U-bar) is 12mm steels reinforcement while the distribution bar (Runner bar) is also 12mm reinforcement steels, drainage base was cast by the formwork been arranged properly and when it is set, concrete is poured and compacted with poker vibrator to remove voids from the concrete, the drainage base is set for curing. The base thickness is 150mm with the width of 1000mm according to the design but 900mm as pertain to what was constructed. When the base is cured, the formwork for the drainage walls are positioned and arranged, the drainage consist of two walls, one at each end of the base, the thickness the wall is 150mm each and the height of 600mm (from the drainage base), the height of the drain and base is 750mm. when the formwork are placed and supported with big concrete stones and woods, concrete is poured into the formwork and compacted with poker vibrating machine to remove voids from the concrete. This is how the drainage is been constructed throughout the length of the road. The ‘bucket’ has U-bar of 700mm by 700mm, the distribution bars are 12m in length. Constructions done on Road site; Earthworks Earthwork is the removal of unsuitable materials in the sub layers and main layers of road pavement and been replaced with suitable materials for a standard construction, Earthwork is one of the major works involved in road construction. It consists of the excavation of the asphaltic surface where there is existing road and when there exist no aliphatic surface, various test would be carried out to check how suitable is the material that will serves as the sub layers to the finer layer which is asphalt. The pail loader, grader, excavator, wheel rollers and the Tipper Trucks are the majorly used machines in the process of excavating. Three layers are worked on during earthwork; Subgrade course of the road which is what is left after the removal of the sub-base layer, which is the undisturbed layer of the road construction. The strength of the subgrade course determines greatly the strength, effectiveness and properties of the other layers coming on it. The Subbase course is subjected to test to know if it has the ability to bear the loading of the road according to the design of the road, if it can’t, then it is being excavated. Laterite is the material being used for this course and the thickness of the subbase according to design is 150mm. Base course of the road is the layer before the asphaltic layer. The materials used for the base course is stone base in which according to the design it is 150mm. After the base course is being prepared, priming is being done to give cohesion between the three layers and the asphaltic layer (surface course) coming on it.

The movement also encourage men and women to stop trying to eliminate African-identified trait by straightening their hair and attempting to lighten or bleach their skin. The phrase ‘black is beautiful’ referred to a broad embraced of black culture and identity. It called for an appreciation of the black as a wordy legacy and it inspired cultural pride in contemporary black achievement. Black Is beautiful because it stands for being bold, proud, and standing on the shoulders of the once who came before us. Abortion Abortion is the ending of pregnancy by removing the embryo or fetus. Abortion is unsafe especially those performed by (unskilled individuals, with hazardous equipment) which causes 47,000 deaths and 5 million hospital admission each year. Around 56 million abortion are performed each year in the world, with about 45% done unsafely. Historically, abortions have been attempted using herbal medicines, sharp tools, forceful massage or through other traditional methods. Abortion laws and cultural or religious views of abortion are different around the world. In some areas abortion is legal only in specific cases such as rape, problem with the fetus, poverty, risk to a woman’s health or incest. There is a debate over the moral, ethical and legal issues of abortion. Those who oppose abortion often argue that an embryo or a fetus is a human with right to life, and they may compare abortion to murder. Those who support the legality of abortion often hold that it is part of a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. But frankly speaking abortion is risky because it leads to death and no one should be responsible for the deprivation of another person’s life but many of them fail to realize all this. Taking an abortion might lead to death of the victim or probably endanger such victims life a lot of girls nowadays needs an enlightment on abortion because they should be aware that not every unwanted pregnancy should be aborted so they should try as much as possible to avoid anything that will lead to unwanted pregnancy that will now make them end up risking their lives because 90% of men out there when a lady is pregnant for them all they suggest is abortion not knowing that its risk and apparently they have committed murder. Abortion should not be legal in our world today people are dieing and a lot of people have even died on Abortion while some of them cannot conceive again because their womb is being damaged.

Human rights Human Rights are freedom that we have under a state which the government must give to citizens. They are permitted to be given to a citizen of a state by law. Human Rights are the civic right that every individual is obligated to enjoy as it is stated in the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. Examples of such rights include; right to life, right to dignity of human person, right to fair hearing, right to worship, right to freedom of the press, right to education, right to freedom of association, right to freedom of speech, right to religion. Because such rights are important , the United Nations in 1948 made it a declaration of Fundamental Human Right and the resolution made it compulsory for all states to include such rights into their constitutions. There have been an abuse of our rights in the country because many people are not aware of their rights and we do not follow the constitution in our country this forms of abuse includes that ; people may not be able to vote during election, people may not be given fair hearing in the courts of law, torture and indecent treatment by the law enforcement agent, people may be arrested, imprisoned without trial, seizure of properties. And this have so many on individuals because they are being abused on their rights such as; people may suffer looses especially when they are deprieved of certain rights, it may lead to destruction of lives and properties, it leads to political instability, people may disobey the law in order to protest the abuse of their rights. But this absue of rights can be prevented in ways such as people should be educated on their fundamental human rights so that they would not be deprived of their rights, Government should uphold the rule of law to guarantee the rights of the citizens, people should be given the opportunity to challenge any violations of their rights in the court of law, there should be independence of the judiciary because the court is the last hope of the common man. Lets protect the right of our citizens, lets follow the constitution!!!!

This peculiar traits include their mode of dressing, their language an their beliefs and value one will fully recognize an ibo person just mere speaking or their mode of dressing , you will fully recognize a Yoruba man or an hausa man. Values in African culture are understood as beliefs that are held about what is right and wrong and what is impotant in life. Culture refers to the totality of the pattern of behavior of a particular group of people. It includes everything that makes them distinct from others for instance their greeting habits, foods, songs, taboos, rites and social norm. Every individual who grows up in a particular society is likely to become incuilcate with the culture of that society, whether knowingly or unknowingly during the process of social interaction. We have a lot of values that are practiced in African culture we have the; social values, religious values moral values, political values and economic values. African culture just has so many values they believe I for instance in Ibibio ukang (ordeal) is a very popular method of crime detention, African culture has a moral code that forbids doing harm to a relative. In African culture it is believed that it is not good to whistle at night because it calls for snakes. African culture is very rich and diverse in nature. African culture is very unique . Africa is inhabited by various ethnic nationalities.

In 1948 where the united nation passed a revolution to the UDHR in article 6 of this resolution it stated, ‘’Everyone has a right to education , education should be free for some certain people because not everyone has the capacity to sponsor a child throughout school and also the less privileged . Education should be looked into in the country because we have lot of people that are so ignorant of what is going on in the outside world because 90% of young children are on streets today deprieved of the Right to Education.
