Pfizer Inc. will study the effectiveness of its vaccine against covid 19 by vaccinating the entire population over the age of 12 in a city in the south of Brazil.
The research will be conducted in Toledo, a municipality with 143,000 inhabitants, in the west of the federal state of Paraná, together with the Brazilian national vaccination program, local health authorities, a hospital and a federal university said.
Pfizer, who developed the vaccine with his German partner Bajnotek, said the purpose was to study the transmission of the coronavirus into a "real-life scenario" after the population was vaccinated.
"The initiative is the first and only of its kind to be launched in cooperation with a pharmaceutical company in a developing country," Pfizer said.
There is little resistance to vaccines in Toledo, where 98 percent of the population received the first dose, mostly of the Pfizer and Bajnotek vaccines.
The AstraZeneca and Sinovak vaccines against Covid 19 were also used there, said Municipal Health Secretary Gabriela Kucherski, adding that 56 per cent of the population had been fully vaccinated. Regis Gulart, a researcher at Moinhos de Vento Hospital in the city of Porto Alegre, who participated in the research, said that the goal was to confirm the real efficacy and safety of the vaccine, which has already been clinically tested.
The research will also enable long-term follow-up of participants, helping to answer questions such as the duration of protection against the vaccine against kovid 19 and new variants of the virus, Gulart said.
