I hope you have all listened to the podcast.Back to our season preview now. Ter Stegen's season ended in the worst possible fashion as it can end for a keeper. Let me start by saying despite that, Ter Stegen is definitely world-class. The hardest thing to achieve for any player is consistency of the highest quality. MATS has achieved that. However, he certainly has a blot on his CV in the last 5 years: CL away game in the knockout stages. Even if we agree it's an issue the team as a whole has been facing, MATS has certainly failed to live upto the top '3/5 keeper in the world' billing in these games.
Paris 4-0. Turin 3-0. Roma 3-0. Anfield 4-0. Lisbon 8-2. Revisit all the goals conceded and you can't help but think MATS could have done much better for some of the goals. It's a weird pattern because he is someone who has always turned up in the most decisive moments in the league or the domestic cup irrespective of the home or away bifurcation. He has had so many good Clasicos. But somehow, he ends being bang average during the away KOs in CL.
This is not to say that he is to blame for our losses. This is about his ability and how he needs to step up. At least he takes responsibility for the losses, and I'm glad for that.
