Brave Browser adds support for IPFS

What is IPFS? - InterPlanetary File System (F/S) is a A peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol designed to make the web faster, safer, and more open. IPFS is an open-source project created by Protocol Labs, an R&D lab for network protocols and former Y Combinator startup.  IPFS aims to surpass HTTP in order to build a better web for all of us.  The desire is to get away from centralized Backbones and HTTP

Some of the major IPFS F/S constructs:

  • Distributed Hash Tables (DHT)

  • Block Exchanges

  • Merkle DAG

  • Version Control Systems (VCS)

  • Self-certifying File System

Why add IPFS support?  to strengthen the access to the decentralized web.

What are Brave's goals for IPFS integration? The initial release of native support for IPFS provides basic node functionality, and Brave plans to introduce more IPFS implementations in 2021 including adding IPFS support to Brave’s Android browser. The firm will also experiment with integrating the features and economic models of the Brave network’s utility token, Basic Attention Token (BAT) and Filecoin (FIL).

Which version will support IPFS? Brave says that with version 1.19, users will be able to access URLs that start with ipfs://,

Who else is adding IPFS support this year?  Theta Network is adding IPFS in '21

Support added in 2020?  Opera Browser added IPFS support in March for their Android Browser in Android 57.

Any Major sites already support IPFS?  Yes, Wikipedia already supports it

Summary - another brick in the wall of decentralization while helping everyone with better access speeds. No its not all at once it will continue to take time to build out. More to learn folks!
