Do you get up early because you have to go to work quickly in the morning or because you like to do something in the morning peace and quiet? Do you have to go to the toilet several times at night? Do you have a small child that you often play with on the floor? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you certainly know the pleasant feeling when you step on or sit on a soft carpet that doesn’t freeze your feet.
People have always covered the floors in their homes to make us more comfortable. The first choices were animal skins and fur coats because they were just at hand. Later, we invented techniques for making carpets by weaving and knotting, first by hand, then by machine. In the Arab world, it is still customary today to decorate the walls of homes with carpets and even cover other pieces of furniture. The carpet not only cares for comfort, but also for home decoration, it can even add a touch of prestige.
Taffeta, woven, knotted
There are several types of carpets: we divide them according to the method and material of manufacture, and their price also depends on both. Today, most carpets around the world are made by machine, most often by weaving or tufting. The latter procedure is relatively quick and simple: with needles into which the yarn is threaded, they pierce the base to form loops. If the loops on the top of the carpet are cut, a hairy surface called a hairy flora is formed. Uncut yarn forms a loop surface. The hairy flora, for example, has recently had very modern fur coats, which are found in a wide variety of colors and patterns. They are mostly made of various synthetic fibers, such as acrylic, so they are less sensitive to dirt and wear. Natural materials for tufted and woven rugs include cotton, jute, sisal, felt and coconut fiber. Modern carpets are adapted to all styles of furnishing the apartment, easy to maintain and in all price ranges.
Woven rugs are a bit more demanding to make, especially hand-woven ones are also much more expensive. None of these, however, reach the price - as well as the durability and quality - of hand-knotted oriental rugs. These are usually made of wool or silk, hand-cut to the appropriate height of the flora and in classic oriental patterns.
What matters is how we use it
When we decide to buy a rug, of course, we look not only at the price, but also at the purpose and our needs. Even such a beautiful fur coat will not last long if we do not have time to vacuum it regularly to remove dust, hair and some crumbs. The loop surface is not the most suitable if dog and cat claws walk on it every day. Durable acrylic fibers may not be as sensitive to dirt, but they are less suitable for allergy sufferers and small children.
You need to think about all this when you start buying a rug that will decorate your home, give it warmth and increase comfort. You will certainly be able to be professionally advised by sellers in specialized carpet shops.
