Mount K2 is the 2nd highest peak in the world located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. This mountain is a little lower than Everest. In August 2006, a mysterious event took place on this mountain. Whose secret is still unknown.
Ketu is one of the most terrifying mountains in the world. About 30 out of every 100 people who go to climb it die. Due to its extremely steep shape, Ketu is much more difficult to climb than Everest. So even though Everest is the highest peak in the world, the demand for Ketu climbing is much higher than Everest. For this reason, the title of King of the Mountains has been added to the fate of Ketu instead of Everest.
In 2007, a total of eight climbing groups from the Netherlands, Korea, Serbia, the United States, France and Italy decided to climb Ketu together. The groups included climbers from the six countries, as well as climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Norway and Ireland, for a total of 30 climbers. According to the plan, they reached the foothills of Ketu in the last week of July.
On August 1, a group of 30 climbers started climbing to reach the summit of Ketu. The leader of the team was a very experienced climber named Van Riesel, who had already climbed several other peaks, including Everest.
But the disaster started just 12 hours after the start of the ascent. A climber named Drain Mendic pulls himself out of the life rope for a quick climb and quickly begins to climb to the top. And after a while, he slipped and became the first victim of Ketu. An hour later, another Pakistani climber died while trying to rescue his body.
In such a situation, a few other climbers, including a Norwegian woman climber named Silas Sorg, decided to return. But where there is fear of tigers, there is night. Celias Sorg came to climb Ketu with her husband Ralph Bay. They got married only 1 month ago. Ralph was then crossing a ridge where there were giant snowflakes on the mountain. Unfortunately, just then the iceberg began to collapse. Her husband died in front of Silias Sorg's eyes after he was crushed under the rubble. What has happened so far can be called an accident But then the unexplained activities started.
At 5:00 pm on August 5, group leader Van Riesel and several other climbers were able to reach the summit of Mount Ketu. In the twilight light of the evening, the clouds rose and looked all around from the peak of Ketu. Ketu's foot could not be seen from above because of the clouds.
The height of Ketu is 6,611 meters. And the height of more than 6 thousand meters is called death zone. Upon reaching this height, the normal activities of the human body begin to cease. Even with adequate food and oxygen, it is not possible for humans to survive long at this altitude. Since it is not possible to spend the night at such an altitude, Van Riesel decides to reach below the death zone level in the middle of the night. As a result, they began to descend.
After descending a little, they could see the light of a few torches from far below. The torches were burning at the top. But suddenly all the torches went off at once.
As they descended, they came to the spot where the torches were burning. The bodies of three Korean climbers were found there. There are no signs of avalanches, they did not understand how they died.
At the same time, two more Nepali climbers died mysteriously on the other side of Ketu. Meanwhile, a strange thing happened suddenly. A mountaineer by the name of McDonnell started climbing upside down without telling anyone. Later he never came back down.
Meanwhile, after the capture of Frost Bite, group leader Van Rijel became almost blind. At one point he stopped climbing and lay down on Ketu's chest. Maybe he realized he would never get along with Ketu again. Van Riesel's companions left him that way and began to descend.
Meanwhile, the news of this fate of the mountaineers reached the Pakistan Army. They send helicopters for rescue missions. However, the Pakistan Army is also in danger later. Because the area is about 5,000 meters above sea level. Helicopters cannot fly at this altitude as the wind is very thin. However, after many attempts, the helicopter was able to reach the foot of Ketu. The surviving climbers from Ketu were airlifted to Pakistan's Skardu Hospital by helicopter.
Eleven of the 30 climbers died in that terrible climb. Of the 19 survivors, only 2-3 had the good fortune to climb Ketu, while the rest returned to base camp in the middle of the climb. They were also seriously injured after being bitten by a frostbite.
The incident sparked a worldwide response. In addition to TV reports, several books and documentaries have been made on the incident. At the same time, the event is recorded as the most tragic climbing in the history of the world.
The bodies of the mountaineers killed in Ketu could not be found. And even if it is found, it is not possible to bring it down. So their names are engraved at the foot of Ketu to remember the dead So far 90+ names have been engraved there. The victims were called "Ghost of Ketu". Many believe that Ketu has something to do with the souls of the dead. Even today, the dream of conquering Ketu is like a nightmare for any mountaineer.
Thank you.
