Religious Violence

Major cause of religious Violence is lack of religious Tolerance. Extremists and religious fanatics are agents of religious Violence. Many times, people tend to cause brouhaha in the religious institution so that they go viral either on social media or during their religious gathering. The only religious institution that tolerates any other religion is the traditional religion (according to research).

Religious Tolerance

This can be best defined as the ability to give room for another person's religion within your reach. It can also be defined as allowing other people to practice their beliefs at free will. Blasphemy (The act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for any religion's deity or deities.) Is an act that is against religious tolerance because no individual, or religious institution will be able or keep mute when they insult or mock their beliefs. 

To me I believe once 'Blasphemy' is prohibited or has a specific punishment by the law, I am sure religious violence will be history and religious tolerance will be adopted.

Religious Violence

This is the activities that happen between two or more religious institutions that may lead to loss of life and property or damage of property and injury. In some cases it may lead to civil war. Condemnation and blasphemy has proved to be a major catalyst for violence in the religious institution. No religion preaches Killing another. The Bible in many of his verses encourages us to help people, without necessarily being a Christian. 

Likewise, in the Quran and Islamic teaching, Islam has been recognize as the religious of peace because of what it preaches. No verse in the Quran instructed the Muslim to abuse religious head or even fight them until they fight you.

To reduce or eradicate this vice I believe there is work to do by the religious institutions. They should build good relationships with other religions and preach religious tolerance.

Nigeria is a circular state, where we have three basic religions, Islamic, Christianity and Traditional. We can live in peace if only we can tolerate ourselves and avoid unnecessary arguments. To achieve this Blasphemy must stop…
