Many studies have shown that meaningful work has a positive effect on mental health. Work gives people a purpose, provides mental stimulation and physical activity, and puts people into a social network. Simply put; work is good for you.

It must also be recognized that prolonged absence from work can have a negative impact on a person's mental health. Individuals who are off work for long periods of time can become less active, fail to maintain social contacts, and become socially isolated. They may suffer a loss a self confidence and have low self-esteem. All of these effect can lead to poor mental health and conditions such as anxiety and depression.

Despite the fact that one in four people will suffer from mental ill health at some stage in their lives, mental health has been stigmatized and those suffering from it have been discriminated against and excluded from work.

Most people who experience stress or mental health problems recover fully or are able to live with ad manage them, and continue to work effectively. The employer should adopt policies and procedures that enable those suffering from stress and mental ill health to remain in work.

Its is important to remember that equality legislation often makes it unlawful to discriminate against people with mental health problems.
