At least one thousand hectares of crop land in about 10 villages of Maugati union of Netrokona Sadar upazila has been submerged due to continuous rains and unplanned construction of dams in the canal. Drainage is being hampered due to fish farming by constructing ponds with dams at different places of the canal. Due to this, the farmers are in panic as the crops are ruined due to accumulation of water in the land.

Due to heavy rains and landslides in the district, farmers in some upazilas have been delayed in planting aman. When the flood waters receded a little, the farmers started cultivating the land late and bought paddy seedlings at high prices and planted them. The river water has increased due to continuous rains in the last few days. On the other hand, some influential people of Jamati village are constructing ponds with dams at different places of the canal and are cultivating fish. This has closed the drainage system. Due to this, at least one thousand hectares of aman crop land of about 10 villages including Jamati, Naterkona, Asanura, Tikuri, Bade Subundia and Subundia of Maugati Union of Sadar Upazila have been submerged. Therefore, the farmers are afraid of crop loss.

Farmer Kamal Uddin said most of the crop land in the area was under water. The rest of the land is on the way to sink. Small ponds have been illegally constructed with dams at various places in the canal of Jamati village. Houses have been built.

Khokon Mia, a farmer from the village, said, "The canal in our village is closed and water is not flowing into the river." This is destroying the boro crop in the area.

Freedom fighter Abdul Matin Khan said, "About 500 acres of our land has been submerged. Drainage has been stopped due to construction of a pond with a dam in the canal. The river is not able to get down. Aman crop lands of several villages including our village are still under water. I demand the concerned authorities to vacate the canal. '

Netrokona Upazila Agriculture Officer Sabina Yasmin said that she has spoken to the local people's representatives knowing the matter. Due to heavy rains and downpour, waterlogging has occurred in the area. He said that with the help of the affected farmers, he would take appropriate steps to construct small ponds by illegally building dams at different places of the canal with incentive system.
